A card's cost is the set of actions that must be taken to play it. The cost of a card almost always includes an amount of energy that must be deducted from the player's pool. Non-energy costs are described in the card text. These costs are paid along with the energy cost before the action is put on the stack.

The restore cost of a permanent is separate from the play cost. However the restore cost is usually 1/2 of the cost.
