Speed is the number of areas a character can move in a single movement action. It a property of every character, but it is almost always 1, so it is printed in the text area only if it is not 1.
With a speed of 1 a character to can move to the neighboring area in a movement action. With a speed of 2 it can do that twice in a single movement action.
