A card's cost is the set of actions that must be taken to play it. The cost of a card almost always includes an amount of energy that must be deducted from the player's pool.

Card's can have multiple choices as to what the cost is. In the case of energy costs these are listed in the cost area of the card one above the other.

Non-energy costs are described in the card text. These costs are paid along with the energy cost before the action is put on the stack.
